“Meow Out Loud”, “Woof Woof”-- just as internet slang caught on in the 1990’s, many pet owners have invented their own methods to chat with each other. Pet owners create an alter-ego as their pet and imagine themselves in their pet’s “paws” while playing with their other pet friends online. This social phenomenon has begun to take off in full force especially on a new social network site for pets—petizens.com.
If someone you had never met before came up to you and started “Purring” at you—at the very least, you would give the person a double take. However, if you are on Petizens and someone “Meows” at you, you would consider it a friendly gesture and probably would respond back the same way. Many people feel intimidated to post photos or blogs of themselves on FaceBook since it's seen by their friends, co-workers and possibly their boss. On Petizens, people feel more comfortable because it's their pet that is posting the photos and blogs: they’re always appreciated by the other pets.
Petizens is a great way for the owners to express their pet’s personality through their pet’s profile. Karma the cat likes to dress up on her page with funny hats and wigs, while Benny the dog has a sailing theme on his page. Several users are very creative and photoshop their pet’s head on celebrities; one cat pasted his face on Barack Obama! Unlike FaceBook and MySpace, there are not two pages alike on Petizens, which makes this site so much fun to spend time on. Since all pages can be voted upon, it’s very easy to see the best pet pages on Petizens.
Whether you are expressing yourself by barking, creating a really cool page, or are just posting creative photos and videos, there is something to do for any pet lover on Petizens. Most owners find their pets have more friends on Petizens than they have themselves on FaceBook. You can check out the social phenomenon at www.petizens.com or install their FaceBook application.
