Mr. and Mrs. Smith a.k.a. Brangelina fest, is a movie that had a lot of hype surrounding it that had nothing to do with the movie itself…good thing. The constant talk leading up to the movie was centered on “Are they or aren’t they,” a couple that is. And of course the movie was supposed to answer that most desired question of the summer. Well, I can honestly say that not only was that question not answered but the movie forgot to be entertaining as well. So much for the hype.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a story surrounding two married assassins Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) and John. Smith (Brad Pitt), working for competitive companies. The catch is neither knows the other is an assassin and through a series of events have been contracted to kill each other. Once they realize who they are supposed to kill they are given seventy-two hours to complete there assignment or face elimination themselves. So ensues a series of gun fights, car chases and marital angst. Oh, and Vince Vaughn is thrown in for comic relief.

Now the actual fighting is supposed to be representative of their marital problems and the whole movie is supposed to represent what happens in a marriage when the parties involved grow a part. Okay, I’m fine with that, but the entire film was wholly underwhelming. Never once did I believe that they were truly angry with each other, the sexual tension was rather tepid, and Vaughn was hardly funny. Not to mention I’ve seen better action sequences in Disney movies.

I mean after all the talk leading up to the film, the steaminess that supposedly happened on set, I at least thought some of that would work its way onto the big screen, even if the movie itself fell flat. Alas, no drama, no tension, no humor. Well, little humor. The movie’s storyline is broken up with scenes of John and Jane Smith at a therapist’s office. Those sequences provided the funniest moments of the movie and coupled with Brad Pitt’s visage, mark the only reasons why Mr. and Mrs. Smith is worth watching.

I wish there was more I could say about the film. The reality is it is a mediocre script, with mediocre action and mediocre acting. Not that I believe Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are mediocre actors but they didn’t bring their acting chops to this film, even for a fluff summer film. Unless you’re absolutely bored, with absolutely nothing else to do, I wouldn’t waste my money on Mr. and Mrs. Smith…Brad Pitt or no.
