We all go to “gigs” once in a while and from time to time we might want to take some photographs of the event. It might sound easy, but if you want to avoid those blurred shots depicting humans resembling ants in the distance, then you will need to cultivate a different approach.

Photographing at concerts or in nightclubs can pose problems. None of these are insurmountable with the exception of one – permission. Many official venues will not grant permission, especially if the artists are high profile ones. For local performers, permission should be sought from the venue owner and/or band or performer manager. It will usually be granted. State why you want the pictures and what you are going to do with them.

With a bit of thought and advance planning, you will be able to capture images of bands and performers that are not only acceptable but that are memorable for you and others.

You may even be approached by a band or stage performer to take some publicity or personal shots. If some of these are taken with the band in action (that is, performing live) then it is vital that you develop the correct approach to ensure success.

There are several considerations which I will cover in four articles. You will need to know about the venue and accessibility, the type of band and style of play, the lighting, your equipment, angles of view and any special effects.

But, rest assured, everything is relatively easy to achieve with a bit of forethought.
