The title of your Web site is arguably one of the most important elements of your Web site. Search engines give title tags a lot of weight in deciding relevancy. The title tag is just as important as your visible text (website content) and inbound links.

Search engines use title tags to assess information about your web site. The words in the title tag are what appear in the clickable link on the search engine results pages. What you put in the title tag is a key factor in how your web site will pull up for particular internet searches. Every title tag should be unique and descriptive of that page.

Composing a title Tag

A title tag does not need to make a complete sentence, nor does it need to make sense all the time. My personal strategy is too set up a title tag as “keyphrase Keyphrase Misc Keywords.

Search engines will display 60-115 characters (depending on the engine)

It is important that the keywords and phrases you’re using in the title tag also be in the content of that page. Using words that are not included in the content will greatly limit its effectiveness, especially for a competitive phrase.

The first phrase in my title tag is considered the most important, and will also be used as my primary keyphrase. A primary keyphrase is repeated throughout the content of that page several times.

Keywords and phrases used in the title tag need to be in the content of that page. Using words that are not included in the content will greatly limit it’s effectiveness, especially for a competitive phrase.

Adding Geography

Depending on your business type geography can be a key focus. If you are only seeking clients from a specific geographic area the words in your title tag need to reflect that.

Someone looking for a Search Engine Marketing Consultant in Minnesota may begin their search by simply entering "search engine marketing consultant" in the search engine. However, once they see that their search is returning results from SEM’s from all over the country, they will narrow their search by adding "Minnesota" to their search terms.

Side Note: The more focused you can be, the better search engine results you will see for example:

Search Engine Marketing Consultant pulls up more then 9,310,000 results in Google

Minnesota Search Engine Marketing Consultant pulls up 1,640,000 results in Google

Which phrase do you think you will have a better chance with? The less competition the better, this is where research comes into play. You need to find a middle ground; you want to use phrases that people are actually searching for in addition to having minimal competition.

Should I Put My Company Name in My Title Tag?

Unless your company is well known and already branded I feel that this is just "wasting" title tag space. You should assume that most potential customers will be searching for specific products or services, not a particular company name.

However I am sure the idea here is that you would like to eventually be known. In this scenario I would recommend picking a few but not all pages of your website and displaying your company name in part of the title tags of those pages.

If you are already a well known company it is absolutely essential that you used some of your title tags space for your company name.

Now I am not saying to ONLY use your company name, you most certainly want to follow with a good descriptive phrase and keywords.

For example, if your company is "Rank Higher." and you are a Search Engine Optimization firm in Minnesota, you shouldn't place only the words "Rank Higher" in your title tag, but instead use something like "Rank Higher Minnesota Search Engine Optimization Services Website Positioning Rankings Marketing ." ________

So remember that while there are many important activities that will result in great search engine placement, you must absolutely address your title tag. Give it some thought, and use the suggestions mentioned above, In today’s very competitive market title tags containing “home page” “ page 1” and “welcome to my website” just won’t cut it anymore.
