For Jet Li fans Unleashed will not be a disappointment. It has all the necessary elements to keep his fan-base happy: fights, fights and more fights. But Unleashed offers something else Jet Li fans may not have been expecting from their favorite superhero…acting. Yes Jet Li actually acts in this new film something we have rarely seen from him in his American endeavors but definitely a nice surprise.
Unleashed tells the story of Danny (Jet Li) a man trained as an attack dog and used by a low level enforcer to ensure that those who owe him money are paying on time and in full. Danny is treated like a dog in every way from the cage he sleeps in, to the food he’s given to eat out of the can, to the collar that he wears around his neck. And the collar is where all the trouble lies: Collar on, Danny is docile and manageable. Take the collar off and Danny is a ferocious killer who is not going to stop until all that he has been told to attack is dead.
After a series of unfortunate events, Danny escapes and his found and taken in by a family Stanley (Morgan Freeman) a blind piano tuner and his daughter Sasha a musical prodigy studying at a prestigious music academy. Of course Danny’s owners discover where he’s at and all hell breaks loose as they try to get him back and Danny tries to protect the family he has come to love.
All in all, the movie is entertaining enough. The fight scenes as to be expected are amazing. There was one sequence early in the movie when Danny is unleashed on some folk who were trying to shaft his handler and the whup ass they experienced was priceless. But like many movies with excessive levels of fighting the scenes soon become repetitive and predictable.
The other problem with the fighting is this: Why didn’t someone just shoot Danny? I don’t know about you but if I knew this loan shark that I owed money to, had this hitman if you will, who didn’t use a gun but was essentially a trained fighter, I’d shoot him on sight. As a matter of fact I would but out a hit on Danny to ensure that I never would have to deal with him again. Apparently, however, none of the other criminals in the movie thought about that and suffered greatly for it.
I will say the Jet Li’s acting was pretty good. Danny is a character that has been sorely mistreated and is quite unfamiliar with any aspect of the world other then violence. Watching him learn how to grocery shop or his first experience with ice cream was sweet and touching. Li did an excellent job portraying a man who is experiencing kindness for the first time, add to that his youthful appearance and the difficulty in determining his age, Danny’s childlike behavior and wonder at the world is all the more believable.
All in all if you’re a Jet Li fan this is the movie for you. You’ll get the fighting you want and the chance to enjoy your favorite action hero flexing his acting chops. If you’re not a fan, stay home. It’s not really the movie for you and you’ll probably enjoy it as a rental more then spending your time and money at the theatre.
