Technology advances in materials will soon make our cars so strong they will be unbreakable. Even if turned over by a Category Five Hurricane like Hurricanes Rita, Katrina or Wilma would not harm them. So what if they blow through a hotel or drive into an Outback Steak House? Simply pull them back out, turn them back over and keep on going? Kind of sounds a lot like the old Timex commercials doesn’t it? Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. So how tough will these materials be in our future state-of-the-art technologies and bleeding edge innovations?

Well one brilliant innovator and retired engineer tells me that; “Car Bodies will be built out of high tech layered material, strong, light and functional. Emphasis will be put on safety so no killer airbags allowed.” This is an interesting comment in that; well you might still die as you bounce around inside, even if the car is as strong as a matchbox car dropped from five feet, as the scale of a real one, you see.

Never the less his point is well taken as we start looking at just some of the new materials available and coming on line now to automakers and manufacturers. In the very near future these materials will be available to commercial markets through military hand-me-down transfer technologies, meaning the economies of mass scale production will make them very affordable. They will be build with rubbery materials which are 50 times lighter than steel, meaning better gas mileage and 250 times stronger, with a little built in flexibility to absorb some of the shock. Although we will need some sort of airbag system, his point is well taken and that is that we will all have great news? We really will save money on our Car Insurance by switching to the little lizard with webbed feet insurance company. Think on this.
