It is estimated that there are today 97 million women online. What are they doing online? Well, we know that 66 of all purchases online are made or influenced by women. This according to Emarketer.com.
That is something around 3.5 trillion dollars!
That is a lot of buying power!
Some researches show that women spend more time online than men. About 105 minutes online everyday, when they visit an average of nine sites.
This trend is not only for career women, a report from the European Internet Advertising Association identified that 62% of mothers regularly access the Internet
They enjoy discussion forums and social networks. The three core interests are fashion, beauty and celebrity. They read blogs, even though they might not know what a blog is, and yes they like to read gossip, especially Hollywood related gossip.
Amongst the most popular activities are also dating, social networking and photo-sharing
A research by ThinkTank has revealed that half of all women who go online have moved the home computer into the main family room, becoming a central focus point in family life.
Two-thirds of the mothers surveyed said they accessed the web to research their families' health, whilst a third sit with their children as they do their homework online.
Most of all, they like to connect to other women. In fact, they are very active online and some have their own online businesses. Many are actually, doing very well generating income online, but when you compare the number of online businesses run by women, they are still really low in numbers when compared to the online businesses run by men.
This is very interesting because the internet is the perfect environment for women to thrive, and when I say women, I mean women of all ages.
We can see that the interest for generating revenue online is really growing among women over 30 years old.
Two years ago, we would attend internet marketing related events and only be able to meet two or three other women. Today, we see dozens of them at the same kind of events. Let me tell you one thing, they are going from one room to the other, excited about the possibilities and eager to learn what it takes to be successful online. They enjoy every second of it and know how to network like crazy.
They are all trying to understand this online environment and see how they can be part of this opportunity.
You might be thinking, these are very young, computer savvy women, but no, most of them are well over thirty and not very comfortable at all in front of a computer.
I find this very exciting!
The entrepreneurial spirit these women bring to the table is what really counts and like I said before the internet is just the perfect environment for them. You don't need to understand about computers, programs and "techie stuff", you need to understand about relationships and trust, something mature women usually know a lot of and these are the key points to build a successful online business. You need experience in life and with people.
You are probably asking yourself why I think the online world is perfect for women entrepreneurs, and here is why:
The internet allows flexibility, which is important when women have families and kids to take care, they can multi-task a lot, as they usually do, and they can build a business from scratch with a very low budget and low risk. They can scale that business as far as they wish with very little overhead. The internet is also a great place to test ideas and when they don't work, very easy and inexpensive to move on to another idea.
The main reason though, is the fact very few people understand the dynamics of the internet and what is necessary to be successful there.
Most people try to duplicate what they have offline, or they try to market the same way they would market offline, hard-selling people and trying to push their products and services down your throat, not stopping for a second to think about the person on the other side of the screen.
Women naturally understand about creating relationships, making connections and building trust. They know about the power of conversations, referrals and engaging people in their cause or point of view. They crave for a community sense. They know how to deal with different personalities. This is what the internet is about and this is the secret to succeed.
Simply put, women get this better than men. This is the time for them to take advantage of these assets.
You don't need to know the definition of Web 2.0, you need to get that Web 2.0, is about being able to keep the conversation going.
I think you can do this, can't you?
Today at our office, from every 10 people we talk to, 8 are women, well over 30, I'd dare to say many are over 65, trying to start a business online. They have the desire but are really scared with the notion that they should understand a lot about computers or that their time has passed and they are too old.
This is just not true. The "techie stuff" you can outsource online for very little money, and your age can be a huge asset, like I mentioned before.
During the last three years, we have seen many of them change their lives, increase their income and live a new kind of freedom.
There are a lot of women struggling in life, being underpaid in low life jobs. Many single mothers with two or three jobs and not spending enough time with their kids. Others, with many kids and not enough income and others, that find their nests empty, have a lot of good things to share and a lot to contribute. Many are just trying to help others. Why they don't take the step of going online and get the life they deserve?
The internet is full of opportunities and there is a lot of money there for all of us.
So, if you have an empty nest, a nest that is full of eggs, a nest that was never used; let's turn this nest around and fly it into the wind. It is not too late and it is way worth it!
All starts with the right mindset.
