Regardless of how much you might prepare for a disaster, it may not be enough. If disaster strikes, it pays to be prepared for the aftermath.

After a fire destroyed his Sunland, California home three years ago, Rene' Jones decided to take matters into his own hands. Knowing there was nothing he could do to stop the disaster from occurring, he put his more than 15 years of Supply Chain and Logistics experience and moved that knowledge from the warehouse to the living room. Rene' and his company, Total Logistics Solutions developed a concept aptly named, Cover Your Assets.

Their model began with the development of their software program named CYA. It is home inventory software which allows the user to inventory their homes contents: room-by-room and item-by-item. The easy-to-use software allows you to input each items serial and model numbers, it also allows you to document when and where each item was purchased. And, if you are developing a living will or trust the software allows you to assign each item to an heir. But that is only the first phase of their Cover Your Assets program.

Phase II includes a, "Home Inventory Specialist." As Rene' said, "It is not that I did not think having an inventory of my homes contents was important, I did not have the time to do it." He states, "Lack of time", as being the number one reason less that 20% of homeowners have an inventory of their most cherished possessions. So, knowing the software was the first step he could provide in helping families prepare for a disaster, he also knew he had to do more. If an individual needs help with their inventory, one of their, "Home Inventory Specialist" will come to your home and document, photograph and input your entire inventory into your computer for you. Upon completing the inventory, the Home Inventory Specialist will provide the homeowner with a "FREE" disaster preparedness kit and help them complete an all important evacuation plan. Which will be a list of items most important to you, should you be forced to evacuate your home.

Total Logistics Solutions is now offering the ability to become a Home Inventory Specialist in your area. "We are a small company that is trying to make a big difference", said Rene'. And the way to do that is to recruit individuals that are also looking to help their communities with their own home based business.

Phase III is probably the simplest and most important aspect of their Cover Your Assets program. It is the ability to have Total Logistics Solutions, Inc. store the inventory online out of harms way. "My wife's computer and my computer burned in our house fire. And I have yet to see a homeowner being evacuated and they have their computer with them. In this digital age-our lives: photographs, music, phone numbers, email accounts, etc. are all digitized." You need to have those things protected.

Your level of preparedness is up to you. But know this, your family will not accept the excuse, you did not prepare because of work. Your family will not accept the excuse, you did not prepare because you did not have the time. Many homeowners find out later, after the dust has settled, that they will not be receiving the full benefit of their homeowners policy because they cannot prove what they lost. They also learn at this most inopportune time they were underinsured.

Michael Scruggs, a Home Inventory Specialist in Florida with Total Logistics Solutions offers these reasons why businesses and homeowners should compile an inventory.

-Forty percent of small and medium-sized businesses do not reopen after a catastrophic event because of a lack of resources.

-Insurance companies rely on a documented inventory of belongings to process a claim.

-Without an inventory, your claim will likely take longer and your benefit will be smaller.

-Your are probably underinsured, and you will not realize it until it is too later. An inventory will help you determine what coverage is really needed.

-It is easier to do now that by memory after a catastrophe.
