Abdominal migraine is a condition that mainly occurs in children. They experience pain in the central abdominal area. They normally experience nausea and vomiting as well as loss of appetite. Many children suffer excessive nausea and vomiting but will not have a headache.
These attacks can last up to seventy two hours at a time. Children will need to be kept comfortable as they do not always understand what is going on in their bodies.
It is most likely that children who suffer from this type of migraine will begin to get migraine headaches as they grow older. They do tend to become less again once they are adults. This is a least a good thing.
Fortunately there are many drugs that doctors have access to for children to help relieve their pain and make them comfortable.
It is good to check the child's diet and make sure that nothing is being eaten that could possibly trigger off an attack. Call in the help of a dietician if you are not sure what would be the best diet for a child of the relevant age.
Investigate if there are any outside factors that could trigger off an attack. Over excitement, any type of stress or fear. Make a note of the circumstances before an attack starts and what the patient has eaten and you could see a pattern in the attacks. By doing this you could be a great help in alleviating your child's pain.
There are a number of less know types of migraine namely
Basilar artery migraine is some sort of a disturbance of the major brain artery which is situated at the base of the brain.
This type of migraine mostly attacks young women and is associated with the menstrual cycle. There are various symptoms which include double vision and poor muscular coordination.
Headache free migraine has all the symptoms of the usual migraine except that there is no headache.
Status migraine is considered to be one of severest types of migraine as the pain is so intense that the sufferer in most cases has to be hospitalised. It usually lasts for more than 72 hours. Many patients have reported being depressed and anxious before an attack.
An Ophthalmoplegic mirgraine is when the sufferer has problems with their vision. It could be manifested as double vision or a droopy eyelid or other visual problems.
A carotidynia migraine is referred to as the facial migraine or the lower half headache. The reason for this is that the pain is a deep ache or sometimes a piercing pain in the neck and jaw. This can cause swelling over the carotid artery in the neck.
It seems to attack older people more often than younger ones. These attacks can occur several times a week and last from a few minutes to hours.
You can discuss these types of migraine with your medical practitioner if you have been diagnosed as suffering from one of them.
