Want to know a secret about massage therapy? Most massage therapists feel that they get as much satisfaction from giving a good massage as their client does in getting one.
One of the most frequent comments massage therapists make about their occupation is, "I feel so lucky to work at something I love to do,” says Roberta Brosseau, principal of MH Vicars School of Massage Therapy in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.
“We hear this all the time,” she says. “Massage therapists get intellectual satisfaction from lots of things about their practice, whether they help someone recover from an injury or reduce stress, but they get a lot of personal satisfaction, too—‘warm fuzzies,’ if you like.
“Our most successful students are those who recognize the value of positive touch and of the special relationship massage therapist develop working one-on-one with their clients, as well as understanding the different pathologies and how massage can help.”
Massage therapy is one of the fastest growing career fields
today, in response to a steadily growing demand from the public. This growth is also supported by increased referrals from doctors, chiropractors, coaches and other professionals.
At the MH Vicars School of Massage Therapy, most students are preparing for a second career. “We often get students from related medical fields who enjoy helping people, but who want to be more directly involved with them,” Brosseau says.
Mature students like the school because the distance-learning format allows them to fit their training into current work and family schedules. Students come to Edmonton or Calgary for monthly or weekly tutorials that include lectures and hands-on instruction. Using the school’s comprehensive materials, students do most of the academic work at home between classes.
This format makes the program affordable, too. Most students are able to study without giving up their day jobs.
