Blepharitis, in layman's words, is the inflammation of the eyelids accompanied with such symptoms as redness, itching, burning, excessive tearing, blurred vision, and dry eye. These symptoms are associated with bacterial infections on the lids. As currently there is no effective cure for blepharitis, treatment of blepharitis involves controlling the condition. In most cases, blepharitis can be effectively prevented by maintaining adequate hygiene. But for more serious cases, medications or natural treatment of blepharitis should also be considered.

The basic treatment of blepharitis involves keeping the lids clean. You should apply warm compresses to your lids to loosen crusts and then scrub the eyelids with a cotton swab. Baby shampoo has been used traditionally for eyelid hygiene, but it is not antibacterial and long time use of it will make the skin dry. As blepharitis does not disappear completely and reoccurrence is common, regular eyelid hygiene is important to prevent its reoccurrence.

Blepharitis is not a serious condition but still requires your attention as it could last for a lifetime. If you are familiar with the symptoms mentioned above, your eyes should be checked for other complications such as glaucoma. Do remember not to scratch your eyelids in order to avoid infection. Certain drugs, such as anti-depressants or blood-pressure-lowering tablets may cause sore eyes, so if you are taking these and are suffering from blepharitis, you should tell your doctor and get your doctor's advice. These drugs may damage your eyes indirectly. If the condition does not improve on its own, it is imperative for you to get it checked out in an Eye Clinic.

If your eyelids become inflamed, refrain from any kind of eye makeup or contact lenses. Get sufficient sleep, and avoid eyestrain. Anything that increases eye fatigue worsens the condition. Self-care plays a considerable role in the recovery of blepharitis. In addition to good care, your diet also has an affect. It may sound strange, but a healthy diet does prevent blepharitis. A well-balanced diet that emphasizes fresh fruits, raw vegetables, grains and legumes is useful.

The good news is that there also exists a natural treatment of blepharitis which involves vitamins, herbs and supplements. Natural ingredients are included such as vitamin A, carotenoid complex and lutein, all of which are well-known for their benefits for all eye disorders. In addition, vitamin C and bioflavonoid concentrate, which are strong antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties, are useful. These are all natural and have no side effects. Treatment with these ingredients has become popular recently based on hundreds of successful cases.
