Although specialists have been researching this disease for long time, and although there have been a few breakthroughs, a cure for this condition is still on the way. The causes of Meniere's disease are still unknown, and unfortunately, no current medical or surgical treatment can cure the condition. However there are still are many patients who have experienced remarkable improvements in their conditions with the natural treatment of Meniere's disease. There are some protective strategies worth a try, such as change in diet, medication or surgery.

If a person experiences symptoms such as dizziness, roaring sounds in the ear or light hearing loss, he or she might have a case of Meniere's disease. If this is so, the sufferer should consult a doctor and get some hearing and blood tests taken, an MRI or a CT scan. Symptoms should be described in detail to the doctor so that he or she can give the proper diagnosis.

Fluid is The Main Culprit!

The main culprit of this condition is excess fluid; therefore, reducing the body's retention of fluid through various methods can control the symptoms of the disease. To do this, you may have to reduce your intake of salt. A low-salt or salt-free diet can probably control excess fluids in your inner ear. You should also avoid caffeine and alcohol, and if you currently smoke, stop. Smoking and caffeine intake can aggravate symptoms of Meniere's disease. For some severe cases, the attacks and symptoms cannot be controlled by diet only, and medication may be necessary. For severe cases also, surgery may be required.

An attack of Meniere's disease is obviously uncomfortable, but there are some ways to limit discomfort. If possible, do not move, and lie on a flat surface. Avoiding drinking or eating too much during an attack is wise as many Meniere's have a tendency towards nausea or vomiting. If you are not able to control the condition by yourself, it is best to see your doctor and get treatment.

There have been many notable people who have suffered from Meniere's disease while still achieving great success. Take Alan B. Shepard, the first American astronaut, for example. He was diagnosed with Meniere's disease in 1964 after his one brief spaceflight. However, several years after receiving surgery, he was able to fly to the moon on the Apollo 14 flight. Although it can be troublesome, Meniere's is not contagious and it isn't fatal. Natural Meniere's disease treatment such as supplements that include minerals and vitamins, can improve the condition. An excess swelling of the inner ear, poor circulation, (especially in the brain) and water retention may be involved in the causes, and these are all addressed with the supplements.
