Health and Fitness article : Is a CPAP Machine worth looking like the Elephant Man?

Not thrilled about looking like the elephant man at night? Hopefully you will be sleeping with someone that realizes the CPAP machine is saving your life. Obstructive Sleep Apnea has many, many side effects besides keeping your partner awake. There are so many conditions and diseases that are related to not getting a full nights rest in REM sleep and most have nothing to do with sleep.

You can be more at risk for heart disease. Not getting being in REM sleep at night will make you more susceptible to depression and making it difficult to concentrate. Along with heart burn, reduced libido and rapid weight gain.

That's not even counting the night time symptoms of not being able to sleep well including insomnia (of course), nocturnal snorting, gasping and choking, confusion upon awakening, excessive perspiring during sleep and frequent nocturnal urination.

What are the downsides of wearing a CPAP Machine, CPAP mask, headgear and a hose running to a machine next to your bed? It might take a while to get used to having something on your face at night and a machine making a little noise next to you at night.

The noise from most CPAP Machines is minimal. They usually make a small constant white noise. Kind of a humming or light whirring noise that won't take long to get used to.

You may not notice any improvement the first night, but after a few nights and especially after a week or more you will notice a big difference. You be amazed that you can make it through the day without taking a nap. You're partner will be able to sleep and you won't be hearing about how loud you're snoring and keeping the entire house and your neighbors awake at night.

Long term effects will be less noticeable that you'll have more energy during the day, your blood pressure may lower and you may find it easier to loose weight because of your increased energy and metabolism.

Sleep apnea is a serious but treatable disease. If your mask and headgear are not comfortable, try different masks and headgear configurations. Most headgear have an infinite number of adjustments available. If your waking up with marks on your face, it's too tight. But you need to have an air tight seal against your face to get the maximum benefit from your CPAP machine. If your having to deal with the mask and machine every night get the best results you can get.
