Eli Lilly & Co. has agreed to pay nearly $700 million to settle a nationwide class action for Zyprexa patients that developed Diabetes.

What is Zyprexa?
Zyprexa is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. Most recently, the FDA has notified patients and healthcare professionals that the drug Zyprexa, has caused diabetes.
Zyprexa Health Dangers and Diabetes
Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zyprexa has been instructed by the FDA to place new warnings on labels and packaging to the commonly used schizophrenia drug Zyprexa. Zyprexa has been linked to diabetes and multiple blood sugar level disorders. Recent study shows atypical antipsychotics - drugs like Zyprexa used in treatment of schizophrenia - appear to cause diabetes at a rate nearly 50 percent higher than previous generation drugs.
