Before discussing natural remedies such as herbs it is always good to remember that herbs, as with drugs can have side effects which can be mild or more dangerous.
One should especially be aware of drugs imported from Asia. Many of these drugs contain substances that could be detrimental to your health in their raw form. They could have bad side effects and could even cause death.

It is always wise to purchase these herbs from legal health stores where they have been correctly processed and labelled. The dosage per age will be clearly defined and side effects will be noted. Adhere to the instructions and they will be safe to take.
Exercise extreme caution before taking herbal remedies. Rather consult a medical practitioner and make sure that they are safe. Side effects could be very unpleasant.

HERBS: FEVERFEW (Tan acetum pantheism)

These herbs have been used for centuries to relieve the excruciating pain of migraine and various other pains. It is effective in most cases. There have been studies made on this herb.

Unfortunately there are many side effects of this herb and should not be taken without consulting a medical doctor or qualified healthcare practitioner.
They should not be taken by pregnant women or women hoping to become pregnant as it is not know what the effect on them will be.

BUTTERBUR (Petasites hybridus) -

Tests done by researchers using this substance on migraine sufferers, seems to indicate that it does help prevent attacks. It is derived from a plant found in parts of northern Asia, areas in North America and in Europe.
Tests were done on migraine patients and it was found that a few milligrams of this substance twice a day were very effective in migraine sufferers. As with all herbs and drugs there can be people that will suffer from side effects.
It could induce vomiting and diarrhoea or alternatively constipation and a feeling of extreme fatigue.

This herb is not only used in the treatment of migraine but also for certain allergies and coughs as well as stomach cramps.
It is not advisable to take the raw herb as it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids. They are extremely toxic to kidneys and liver and could cause serious allergies or worse still, cancer.

It is better to buy the product over the counter in a processed and diluted form. Read the label carefully and take the dosage as prescribed. Overdosing can be dangerous.

COENZYME Q10

A study showed that sufferers who took this substance for a period of three months reported a reduction of headaches. It is a natural substance that is important for the transport of electrons. This substance has not been reported to have bad side effects. It is always advisable to first speak to your medical practitioner before you try any new substance to make sure that it will be right for you.

PHYTOESTORGENS

These are plant substances that have properties similar to estrogen. The plant products included are black cohosh and soy. These remedies should not be taken without consulting a qualified medical practitioner.

KUDZU ROOT (Pueraria lobata)

This substance has an effect on the serotonin receptors and is a great help in alleviating pain in menstrual migraine sufferers.
