Health and heartburn is about balance: As we age, this can take a little more effort to maintain. Can you imagine what would happen if you tried to roller skate today? You’d probably be swinging your arms wildly, as you tried to stay upright. You’d finally achieve skating without falling on your butt but it would take a little practice. The same is true for getting a heartburn cure right.

Heartburn can be cured by maintaining balance in your food intake and it’s not hard to do. It’s human nature to want variety in our menu and you can put that to your advantage by eating new and different foods as long as you keep your balance.

But what if your daily diet is made up of mostly acidic foods? How can your body balance that without the right nutrients? Let’s face it: our diets aren’t the same as our grandparents’. They may have had heartburn too but our lives are much different. Convenient processed foods and meat make up the vast majority of today’s heartburn and our choices are much different with super sized versions of deep fried foods and carbonated sodas replacing water to wash it all down.

But here is a big chance to make a change. With public service announcements pointing up the benefits of healthy eating, it easier now to gain important information and energize yourself for a commitment to cure this heartburn problem.

Heartburn is an acid problem. Chances are, you have a family that can benefit from lowering their daily acid intake as much as you. Dealing with over acidity is as health issue that the whole family can benefit from. There is ample evidence that early habits carry over into later life, pointing to a life with fewer illnesses.

The most important you can do is make diet changes. Your diet is probably calcium deficient. You can find out by making a list of everything you eat. The nutritional labels of packages are not meant for heartburn calculations but will give you the amount per serving. Use this to figure your daily total of calcium, potassium and magnesium. Calcium for males is 1,000mg/day, for females it‘s 1,500mg/day. Magnesium is half that dose.

Vegetables and most fruits are the cornerstone of a heartburn cure, unfortunately they don’t come with nutritional labels. The only loose number I can give you is to say that dark colored plant foods have the most minerals and therefore are less acidic. Eat 5-7 servings daily and reduce the intake of meats and processed foods to 30 percent of your total.

Treat yourself to a new cookbook, one that stresses low meat, low fat meals. Try to include more mineral rich food in your diet. In addition to heartburn friendly foods like fruits and veggies there are sardines, caned fish (mackerel), tofu, fortified breakfast cereals, dairy products and soymilk.

Your first objective is to reduce the intake of acidic food so your body can heal. As you progress with this you need to think of food as part of a wellness plan to begin rebuilding mineral reserves. The more aggressive the plan the quicker the recovery. You can call it a heartburn cure but it will have many more benefits, especially as the body begins to age.
