Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that normally affects the end section of the small intestine and the beginning part of the colon.

The most common symptoms of Crohn’s disease are malabsorption, chronic diarrhoea, bloody stools, abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, fullness in the abdomen, loss of appetite and anal fissures.

The cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown but it is believed that it could be diet, bacterial, viral or parasitic infection that causes the symptoms. Studies have shown that certain foods make the symptoms worst and the main culprit foods are wheat, milk, corn, yeast, potato, egg, tea, mushrooms, rye, coffee, apples, chocolate, nuts, raw fruit, tomatoes and oats. These trigger foods vary from person to person. Other studies showed that people with a high amount of sugar in

their diet suffered more from Crohn’s disease and also a study in Japan showed that people with a high amount of animal fats in their diet were likely to suffer more from Crohn’s disease. Another study showed that eating fast food can triple the chances of suffering from Crohn’s disease.

Lifestyle changes can help those who suffer from Crohn’s disease. Studies have shown that those who suffer from Crohn’s disease are more likely to be smokers; quitting smoking would be beneficial to the Crohn’s sufferer.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from Crohn’s disease.

Fish Oil

Grapefruit seed extract
Liquorice
