Eight million people living in the UK have osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis - on average 2 million people per year see their GP's regarding osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is more likely to be present in women than men and normally will not start to appear until you are over 40 although it can start at a younger age than this.
Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. Osteoarthritis normally attacks the knees, hips, wrists, ankles and spine. Traditionally joints gain a knobbly appearance due to the bones compensating for the rough thinning cartlidge by getting thicker and growing outwards. The capsule around the joint also thickens and becomes inflamed. It is considered to be a wear and tear medical problem.
At present it is not fully understood what causes osteoarthritis although certain things can make it more likely for you to be one of the 8 million sufferers of osteoarthritis, these include:-
" Being female rather than male
" Some strands are considered to be hereditary
" Obesity or over weight people cause extra stress on their joints and increase wear and tear
" Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers may suffer from osteoarthritis as a secondary ailment
" Operations and injuries on joints may create problems later in life
" Very active lifestyle or professional sport playing
Osteoarthritis sufferers will experience painful stiff joints that may also be swollen. For each person these symptoms may be aggravated by different conditions such as the weather and increased exercise. Initially the pain may be more severe and settle down slightly over the following years, but whether the pain and discomfort has actually decreased or your body has adapted to cope with the discomfort is very hard to tell. Joints may become unstable as they become more distorted from their knobbly appearance.
There is no single test for the GP's to undertake, so diagnosis will include a lot of questioning from the GP, X-rays and visual examination of the joints.
