A baby’s cry can actually be nerve wrecking for a parent and a lot of you may be beside yourself because you are not sure of what to do about it. Are you by chance among these parents who feel so bad every time your baby starts to cry and you can’t help but to pick them up each time they utter the smallest cry? Well, no need to worry because you are not alone in doing so. The question is; how healthy is this for your baby?

Not very many parents can help themselves when their newborn baby is crying, they just have to go there and pick them up if for nothing else to make sure the baby is ok. This is all and fine but in the long run, is this a wise thing to do or should your baby be allowed to cry a little bit without you having to rush to its side and pick him/her up? The answer to this can be justified from both sides but what should you do?

You might have heard this before; “wow, that kid sure got his parents trained”. This saying does not come from nowhere, because already when they are babies they are very good at getting what they want and it all start with crying their way into getting what they want. Some babies may not like to lie down and they learn very quickly that if they cry long and hard enough someone will pick them up. Oh yes, they know.

To pick your baby up just to make them feel loved and secure is a good thing because it gives the child a sense of security but on the other hand if you start giving in to the

baby’s every little cry you might soon find that he or she will not be satisfied anywhere else than in your arms. This can turn out to be an extremely difficult position to find yourself in, unable to do anything without the baby in your arms.

At times it can therefore actually be good to let the child cry for a while without picking him up. It will teach your baby that you will not give into all he wants and as long as the baby is dry, fed, and warm enough there is no reason why he or she can not be allowed to cry for some time. Believe it or not, you will soon find that your baby will not cry as much and if you have toys or noise in the bed or playpen, the baby will turn its attention to this instead of trying to get your attention at all times.

So for the question if you should allow your baby to cry for a while you might be able to make up your mind by seeing what it can do for the both of you. There is always a middle ground of what is healthy and what is not. As long as you take the time to give your child lots of love and attention there is no reason your baby should not be able to cry for a while if you have things to do. Babies, as well as you, are capable of entertaining themselves for a little while as long as you have things for them to keep them entertained.
