When selling your home there are simple steps you can take that will increase your home's appeal to buyers. This is what we call "staging" or "redesigning" your home.

Here I will show you what you can do to your bedrooms to make them more attractive to potential buyers.

Make bedrooms look like bedrooms. If you use a bedroom for another purpose, turn it back into a bedroom. You can set an air mattress on top of boxes or milk crates. Make a pretty bed and make the bedspread or quilt hand low enough to cover the view of the boxes or crates. Buyers won't look under the bed. If you have a crib you can use, this will also work.

Put away everything other than essential furniture, one or two lamps, and alarm clock. Large candles or fresh flowers are excellent.

All "back of door" hanging items must be put away. Cluttered doors can really weight a space down and give the feeling that the room is "too small".

A new bedspread or quilt can do wonders for any bedroom. You can find excellent prices at large chain stores; even garage or estate sales and thrift stores can be good sources for pretty bedding.

Thin out toy collections. Put some in storage; keep the remaining toys in a box or bin that can be closed up neatly for showings. If you have room to keep it in a closet, do so.

Take down all posters, photos, pictures, drawings, and awards. You want the buyers to be able to see your house as a blank slate where they can imagine their own milestones and mementos on display.

This is a quick list to get you going. You can apply the principles of staging to every room in your house for maximum buyer appeal. In future articles we'll go over more ideas for the inside of your house, plus we'll discuss how to get more of that magical curb appeal you always hear about.
