The last thing that anyone wants to see on his or her roof is algae discoloration. This is a very common occurrence throughout the Southern and Eastern United States and is better treated with prevention. The discoloration can be difficult to remove and is best left to a professional. It should be mentioned that you do not have a defective roof if you see an overgrowth or discoloration of algae. The algae can be removed but it is often too difficult for a non-professional to remove it. Also, there haven’t been any associations of illnesses occurring with the algae, however, most homeowners feel that the algae is unsightly and wish to have it removed.
Many people may feel that pressure cleaning or washing is the best way to remove algae stains, but again, this should only be attempted by an experienced professional. Pressure washing may be effective but it is often very powerful. Many homeowners have unwittingly removed numerous shingles by using pressure washing on their roofs. To make sure that you do not inadvertently damage your roof, let a professional handle the pressure cleaning.
Also, if you’ve ever felt an asphalt shingle, you noticed that it felt grainy. It is very important that those little grains or granules remain on your shingles. They are the shingles defense against ultraviolet rays and are frequently removed by high pressure cleaning. Only a trained professional should use high pressure cleaning on your roof.
Your roofing contractor may decide that the best way to remove the algae is to install metal stripping on the roof. These metal strips oxidize when they come in contact with the air. When this process happens, they release metal ions. When it rains or if water is applied to the roof, the ions will travel and helps to break down the algae. Your roofer will advise you on whether or not they feel that installing metal strips is the best method in your fight against algae stains. They may also use a bleach mixture to remove the stains as well.
