As a family you are forced to share many common areas of your home. The kitchen and living areas are enjoyed by each member of the family and are hold some of our dearest memories. Even though it is a pleasure to be together, everyone needs a small retreat to call their own. Giving each person a place to be alone and reflect on who they are will increase the level of cooperation within the home and promote individual interests.

An overbearing mother/wife who wants each area of the home to reflect her taste may be creating frustrations among the other members. Instead or one recurrent theme throughout, bedrooms should be reserved for the individual tastes and interest of those who reside within them. Since the husband and wife share a bedroom, a separate study or game room decorated to the taste of the man of the house is a good way to promote his interests. If the square footage of a home does not permit a study or game room, allowing the husband to choose colors and items for the living room is helpful.

Color appreciation is different among individuals, and although one person may love pink or blue, it may evoke a completely different emotion from another member of the family. I remember finding out that one of my girls hated pink (with a passion). Immediately, I redecorated her room to a color she loved and changed the décor to something she had an interest in. Her attitude and self esteem were miraculous changed. Taking time to understand the color psychology of all the members of the family will help create an environment where everyone feels comfortable.

Textures, like colors, can evoke different emotions. Some members of a family may enjoy leather, while others find it cold and uninviting. If the interest in texture varies, don’t be afraid to mix and match throughout the house; inevitably, people will migrate to what they like best. When it comes to personal space, the keeper of the cave should choose the materials.

A house becomes a home when everyone feels comfortable in the surroundings that reflect who they are. Take time to develop a decorating scheme that is in tune to your family. If decorating isn’t your thing, or if you can’t see past your own style, hire a professional. You will see a change in the amount of time your family members spend at home and how they actually like being there.
