Internet and Businesses Online article : The Importance of A Contact Form on Your Website

Internet and Businesses Online > The Importance of A Contact Form on Your Website

The continued growth of the Internet can be summed up in two words - Quicker and Easier.
People hate to wait. One hour for a table at a restaurant? Try the next one. Line too long at the checkout register? We demand you call the other cashiers! We’ve become so used to getting what we want almost instantly that we often won’t put up with lines or delays in any aspect of our busy lives. With so many choices we either move on to the next available option or become distracted by something else.

So what’s this have to do with the title of this article?

Though many people have begun to integrate their email accounts with programs like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla’s Thunderbird there are still a great number of users who sign into accounts such as Yahoo! and Gmail to send an email message. The problem you create without having a custom contact form is that you’re making people work harder than they want to - and allowing them to become distracted. These are two of the biggest Internet sales killers.

With a custom “fill-in-and-click” style form you are providing your visitors with the fastest and easiest possible route of contacting you. Just count the steps someone has to take in order to send you a message from an independent program. The visitor must open a new browser, go to their email provider, sign-in, cut and paste (or worse, re-type) your email address into a message, and then finally fill out and submit the message.

Too many steps and too many possible ways to become distracted. We’ve all seen the Yahoo! Homepage - filled with advertisements and news stories. How often have you yourself gone to a web page for a specific purpose and ended up 15 clicks deep into something you had no intention of searching for? It’s happened to me more times than I can count.

Online business is about understanding the consumer’s behavior. To make a sale on the Internet you must keep your potential customer focused on your product or service and not willfully provide them with a means of distraction. A custom contact form is just one little step toward optimizing your site for maximum performance but as many business consultants will tell you, its the little steps that make the big difference.
