Consider a forum or blog. They create inbound links to your site. Create reciprocal links. Lots of them.... but be sure they are relevant and don’t use link farms!

DO NOT SUBMIT TO GOOGLE. Let them find you through other established links. If you do the link work, Google will eventually find you. They like it better that way.

Be patient! Good rankings do not come overnight. Once you submit, sit back and wait. Do not keep submitting your site, as many search engines and directories will penalize you for this as they make look at it as spamming.

Follow the above basic guidelines and it will help you achieve better ratings.
