If you run a company you know that there are a million factors all working against you earning money. One of them is often staff. It is a continual frustration for someone with an entrepreneurial mindset when an employee just doesn't get it, doesn't work hard enough, moans about not being paid enough or is just plain bad at their job. What is often a forgotten consideration is that these negatives may be trivial annoyances next to the possibility that your employee is actually also robbing you blind.

Statistically 10 of people are at the other end of the spectrum. They are the bad apples. Not only will they rip you off if you give them an opportunity - but they will create the opportunity and take your money without a second thought. Consequences - like your business failing as a result, are trivial considerations.

That leaves 80% of people who are neither fundamentally honest nor dishonest. These are the ones that can be pushed either way. Now ideally everything in society should be pushing them towards the honest path. They should know that if they do the wrong thing they will be caught, and they will be punished. And they should know that everyone around them would think ill of them when they are known

as a criminal.

Unfortunately there has been a big swing to protecting these people. They have 'done their time' and must be given another chance. People want to believe that you really should be innocent until proven guilty. And fair enough. But you don't need to be stupid about it. If someone has a criminal record they are more likely to commit a crime again than someone who doesn't.

Not only is it your right to know if someone you are considering employing is a criminal, it's your responsibility too. This person could do severe damage to your business, both financially and in terms of image. And don't forget your existing employees. More than one employer has had suspicions confirmed by an online court history check, and gone on to apprehend an employee with their hand in the till. These employees are not just robbing you; they are robbing their fellow staff. If the business performed better then the staff are more likely to get a raise. But this thief can't wait for that. He's decided he deserves a raise now.

Don't leave your business success to chance. In this century the power is in knowledge, and the knowledge of your employees pasts is a vital asset to have.
