The Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs on May 3rd in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby is also known as "The Run for the Roses," because a lush blanket of red roses is awarded to the Kentucky Derby winner each year. Itis considered as “The Most Exciting Two minutes in Sports” and in horse race betting.

The Kentucky Derby is the first jewel in the Triple Crown. It is a stakes race which is worth $2,000,000 for three-year-old thoroughbred horses; colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg), fillies 121 pounds (55 kg).

The fastest time ever run in the Kentucky Derby was set in 1973 at 1 minute 59 2/5 seconds when Secretariat broke the record set by Northern Dancer in 1964.

The race is over one and a quarter miles (2 km). Annually, the Kentucky Derby draws around 155,000 fans.

Anyway, the top 5 contenders for the 134th Kentucky Derby in my opinion, starting from the bottom, they are:

5. Monba: He comes off a Blue Grass victory and travels well on dirt and synthetic surfaces. Bred to go long, son of Maria’s Mon always encountered full fields in six career starts, capturing three.

4. Colonel John: Son of Tiznow closed like an express train to take the Santa Anita Derby. He should go to the distance. However, he has a major disadvantage having only raced on synthetic surfaces.

3. Gayego: Won the Arkansas Derby. He covered the 1 1/8 miles at Oaklawn Park in 1:49 3/5 – two ticks faster than ’07 Horse of the Year Curlin. The son of Gilded Time jogged a mile and galloped another mile Thursday morning.

2. Pyro: Son of Pulpit and still a major threat although he has lost his last horse race.

1. Big Brown: This is my nunber 1 pick. Huge Florida Derby victory from the No. 12 post in 1:48 for the 1 1/8 miles was the fastest since ’96 and only a fraction off Gulfstream’s track record. The son of Boundary. He is fast and has not lost a horse race yet!
