It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the Wildcats, Bobcats or Wolfpack. If you're a fan of any college football team chances are you've seen red while rooting "go go [insert any team name here]” when going up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Not only red, but a sea of red. These fans who take it upon themselves to line the seats of the stadium with their torsos covered completely in red, some sporting cornhusker jackets, demonstrate an enthusiasm that is palpable and hopefully contagious.

This team has won more games over the past fifty years than any other team out there which brings to question whether their abundance of go-get-em gusto is a result of their great many wins or if it is the opposite that is true. It is only fitting that one of the team's mascots holds a record as well. Lil' Red is known as the first inflatable mascot.

Perhaps it is the team's forward looking attitude that keeps them on top. Along with Lil' Red, Herbie Husker inspires the crowd at every game and, almost as a testament to the teams willingness to continue on and try new things, Herbie received a makeover. No longer the farmer sporting an ear of corn, this winner of the 2005 mascot of the year now better reflects Nebraska's agricultural workers; a group of important citizens that undoubtedly deserve every bit of attention they get. Supporting this team is just as much a way of life as is harvesting the crop.

When playing at home in front of a crowd bigger than the population of some cities the Cornhuskers hold the record for the most consecutive sold out games. This brings me back to the fans. The team wins games for their hometown, their school, their families and friends and the fans are right there by their side supporting them like a well-oiled machine churning in a sea of red. Other teams may have fans who support them, they may have mascots and records and their own traditions but when it comes to the Nebraska Cornhuskers there is an element present that other teams do not look forward to and that is The Sea of Red.
