Reference and Education article : The Issue of Class Size

Research has consistently proven that small student to teacher ratios are the optimal choice for enhanced learning of students and effective teaching by teachers. Unfortunately, in high schools across the country, student to teacher ratios are far beyond acceptable numbers and teachers spend more of their time managing and disciplining students than actually teaching.

This is an important problem because classrooms are overfilled and students are not learning as effectively because the class sizes do not allow teachers to spend one on one time with students. This is a cyclical process that does not have a simple answer simply because government funds are tight. Hiring new teachers to decrease current student to teacher ratios and constructing buildings for new student classrooms is not in the current budget.

The answer to the solution seems simple; the government should decide upon the best student to teacher ratio to promote learning while making the most use of available resources i.e. teachers and classrooms.

However, while the solution is an easy one it is ineffective because of the lack of funds available to bring the solution to fruition. In an effort to give their children a better education, many parents enroll their students in private schools which guarantee low teacher to student ratios. Many colleges sell themselves on the same point as well.

Perhaps in the future the government will get organized enough to realize the importance of education and more money will be allocated to education.

Only then will student to teacher ratios be reduced in order to give children the best education possible.
