Self Improvement article : Do You Do It Right The First Time or Do You Just Do It?

Self Improvement > Do You Do It Right The First Time or Do You Just Do It?

As I went to my "Tax" guy to prepare some business papers, I got hit by something that prompted me to finally write this article.

When I entered his office, right next to the reception desk, there stood the big poster. It looked like it was 3ft tall by 1.5ft wide. It was all white with big and bold black lettering. The lettering was as big as it could fit on the paper.

The lettering said: "Do It Right The First Time."

That's all the poster was; White sheet of paper with black bold lettering. It was one of those motivational pictures displayed at corporate offices.

I've seen this at many corporations (just a different picture with the same statement "Do It Right The First Time"), but this one really got to me. That's because there was no picture attached to it. It was just the statement all by itself.

I started thinking about it while I was waiting to get in, and I was kind of glad that the employees there are getting influenced by this type of energy. If they don't do my (or other business owners) business paperwork right the first time, then I'll be in trouble dealing with the consequences of the sloppy work.

What bothered me was that I've met way too many people who work at corporate offices that bring this type of influence to their private life – especially entrepreneurs.

Let's evaluate this statement.

From an employee point of view, doing it right the first time is essential to the corporate world. It will keep the cost down and increase the customer satisfaction – not to mention please the boss. That will secure your job and keep that paycheck coming.

From an entrepreneurial and business owner point of view, you will die one day and never get it right. Here's what this shocking statement of mine means.

I've been an employee for 11 years and an entrepreneur/business owner for over 5 years now. I've experienced both worlds first hand and I will spend the rest of my life in the entrepreneur/business owner world.

But if I waited until I did it right the first time, I would've never had a website. I'm still and I will always keep on improving my website(s).

If I waited until I did it right the first time, I would've never had a business of my own; I would've never had a newsletter; I would've never had any products of my own; I would've never had the experience that I have up to this point in my life. I would've never had the accomplishments I have achieved in the past 5 entrepreneurial years. I would've been stuck on the sideline.

As an entrepreneur, you will never get it right regardless of how many times you try, but you will always improve for more. If you try to get it right the first time, ... that first time will never come.

Each step will lead you to another. With each step you'll discover 10 more steps that you didn't even know about previously. Each step taken will require improvement on your side to ready yourself for the next step.

But, how would you ever jump from your current position in your life to the desired position if you never start walking toward it? How would you jump that far all at once if you’re still waiting for that big jump?

A close friend of mine is a dentist. He works for a local dental office owned by an entrepreneur.

This friend of mine has been thinking of opening a dental office of his own for a long time. But, he's still trying to "get it right the first time." He still wants to be right on the money when his office starts receiving patients.

And he still hasn't opened his private practice. That "being right the first time" hasn't come to his life yet. He's is still trying to work out all of the details in advance. On the other hand, he doesn't even know all of the details – that he would naturally learn as he gos along. And he still doesn't have his own practice.

Have you made a firm decision of who you want to be for the rest of your life? If you're going to be an employee, then do it right the first time since that will ensure your paycheck.

If you're going to be an entrepreneur for the rest of your life, then what are you waiting for?

Just do it!
