Support Groups are important, as they allow you to talk with others who are going through the same thing that you are. They can be in person, or thanks to the internet, you can find helping groups online.
To find groups in person, you should call the local hospital, or mental health services center. They probably know of a few of them. Some colleges have groups for their students as well. You should check with your school’s health center. The final option is to ask your therapist if they know of any groups or can help you to find any. They may even lead groups, that will put you in touch with other patients, and you can work together to find cures for each other.
Online groups are also available in three forms. The first is mailing lists. The best place to search for mailing lists today is Yahoo! Groups, and they list over 2100 groups with the keyword search of “Depression”. Obviously, you would want to narrow the search with other keywords based on location or other needs. You can also do a search of the internet for chat rooms, where you can find others to support as needed. The problem with this solution is that you might not find anyone online when you need them to be. An e-mail may wait there until someone reads it, but someone will read it. A post in a chat room, if the chat room is empty or the people there are not actively participating, may go unread and forever unanswered. The final form of online group is arising now in blogging communities such as LiveJournal. By writing in a group there, you can find some of the help that you need and might find the support that you search for.
