William James said, "We don’t laugh because we’re happy; we’re happy because we laugh."

Woody Allen said, "Laughter is like the human body wagging its tail."

It’s been said that a good belly laugh is internal jogging. When you laugh how is your energy level? When you laugh how stressful do you feel? When you laugh and are happy how do other people react to you? We've long known that the ability to laugh is helpful to those coping with major illness and the stress of life's problems. But researchers are now saying laughter can do a lot more -- it can basically bring balance to all the components of the immune system which helps us fight off diseases. People who laugh often earn more, play more, live longer.

During one of our group coaching sessions we noticed that the chemistry was just not right. We were doing what had always worked, but this time the spark of fun was missing. We immediately made fun of ourselves for being so serious. Laughter began to take over. Everyone became more spontaneous. As a result the participants got results. They were motivated to put their new strategies and attitudes into action.

Researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Laughing can be a total body workout! Blood pressure is lowered. There is an increase in vascular blood flow and in oxygenation of the blood which further assists healing. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. That's why you often feel exhausted after a long bout of laughter -- you've just had an aerobic workout!

To put more laughter in your life try these ideas.

1. Figure out what makes you laugh and do it or read it or watch it more often.

2. Surround yourself with funny people -- be with them every chance you get.

3. Develop your own sense of humor. Maybe even take a class to learn how to be a better comic -- or at least a better joke-teller at that next party.

4. Be funny every chance you get--as long as it's not at someone else's expense!

"For every sixty seconds of anger, You lose one minute of happiness." - Emerson
