Positive Attitude article : What You Believe Is What You Are

Self Improvement > Positive Attitude > What You Believe Is What You Are

Our beliefs determine the path our life takes and how much we love our life. More often than not we’ve learned our beliefs from childhood and taken them through into adulthood. Some of those beliefs will empower and some will limit. Coaches work on the limiting beliefs that conceal the pathway. They work with you to clear the brambles and make the road ahead inviting and one you’ll just want to take.

The same holds true for organisations. By looking at the belief system in place they can find the key to unlocking that untapped potential and latent energy waiting to be released.

Very often both individuals and organisations don’t realise what their limiting beliefs are. After all, how often do you sit down and contemplate what you believe to be true about yourself and the world around you?

Not that often, I suspect. Yet, by uncovering what is really holding you back can turn these limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs.

Try this exercise. Write down 5 beliefs that are holding you back at the moment. Look at each one in turn:

  • Where is that belief coming from?
  • Where did you learn it?
  • Do you have any evidence that supports the belief?
  • Is it really evidence or other beliefs masquerading as evidence?
Once you have really dug deep and understood where your limiting beliefs are coming from, brainstorm all the possible ways you could make them empowering beliefs. Eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive!

If your beliefs are:

  • We can’t beat the competition or,
  • I’ll never succeed.
Ask yourself:
  • What makes me think that?
  • What am I doing that is not helping here?
  • How do I know?
  • Who says we can’t beat the competition?
  • Who says I can’t be successful?
Let your answers emerge – instinctively you will know whether or not you’re
being truthful with yourself. By opening up your mind to free thought you allow the possibility of choice. You can then choose how you respond to the limiting belief to make it empowering. For instance:

“I choose to believe that I can succeed. I have had many successes in my life already.”

“We choose to believe that through a true and genuine desire to serve and deliver to our customers we will automatically distinguish ourselves from the competition.”

By opening up more choices and focusing on empowering beliefs you become more resourceful, flexible and positive. An organisation full of individuals with limitless self-belief creates positive energy. An individual with limitless self-belief responds more openly to friends, family and the world in general.

What you believe is what you are. Make your beliefs empowering for a more rewarding experience along life’s journey.
