Self Improvement > Seek to Accept Rather Than to be Accepted

Unfortunately, most of us live in our thoughts and our feelings about these thoughts assuming that this is a natural thing to do. We also assume that everyone else understands what we understand. If it's true for us - it must be true for everyone else as well.

Or at least they should be able to see the reasonableness of our arguments and, with enough persuasion, come around to our way of thinking. There is nothing more aggravating then being faced with someone who refuses to see logic.

However, logic is mostly our beliefs and convictions which are not influential to others in and of themselves. Many people spend a great deal of time attempting to 'convert' others to their particular doctrines and dogmas without realizing that they themselves have become imprisoned in their own convictions. It is human nature to try and help others. We want to 'save people' and help them 'see the light'.

I believe this is putting the cart before the horse. If we really want to help others, we should seek to accept them as they are without the need to change them in any way. Let go of wanting to explain and convince and simply allow people to be. We hold on to our opinions and forget that we are holding on to them. Ask yourself what the world would be like if everyone agreed on everything. It would be an extremely tedious and boring place to live.

There are many who believe that we should shake people out of their complacency and wake them up to the "truth". They believe that, unless people come around to their way of seeing things, the very existence of our species is at risk. I call these people "merchants of chaos". All you need to do is watch the nightly news to see them at work. Dire reports of calamity and catastrophe are everywhere. I'm in no way suggesting that there isn't cause for concern but I am suggesting that the only way that we can actually do anything about the way things are (and, for that matter, about our business or our life) is when we have gained our own freedom and clarity about life. It is said that what we resist - persists.

By insisting that something must be done about (fill in your favorite cause here) and that people must change their ways, we give that problem more power. It is our choice to hold on to this feeling of opposition as long as we desire but, perhaps by allowing the resistance to melt away, we are more able to be active rather than reactive in our lives.

Choose to let it go. When you find yourself arguing for your cause and meeting with resistance from others, choose to turn off the impulse to persuade them and try to accept them as they are. It isn't easy. In fact, it can be downright impossible at times to accept that; what we perceive as utter stupidity; is someone else's reality. But what we stand to gain by the acceptance of someone else's reality is a clearer understanding of what motivates them to act as they do. Without this understanding, we breed more friction and antagonism and accomplish little. The paradox is that if we want to change things for the better, we must start by not trying to change anything and acknowledge that things are as they are for reasons we may not yet fully understand or agree with but can learn to accept.
