Talk therapy is really just that. Therapy accomplished by talking. You sit down with a therapist, either laying down or sitting in a chair depending on your feelings and their philosophies, and talk about what is bothering you or your mood. Talk about your past or about your future. It is a time when you will be able to discuss what is wrong and hear solutions that you might not have considered. You also would be able to plan actions to better your life and join groups. They can help in diagnosing problems and recommending when to go to a psychiatrist.

While this does not seem like anything that you need a specialist for, there are a few reasons why you should do this with a counselor, instead of a friend (although friends can work in a pinch). Counselors know to look for certain things. They are trained to look for signs of clinical versus situational depression. They are trained to help you see what is going on that you might not notice. They also have connections that a friend might not have. They are able to reference you to support groups and other organizations.

They also can work with you to discover the cause of symptoms, especially when there are problems that are not so simply understood. They can work with you to discover the cause of paranoia or depression, which may not be as simple as you think. They can help you to change your life without too much pain, and help you to talk to others when it is time to confront them.
