Rock has had so many great guitarists through the decades that it is often difficult to say that one artist is better than the other. I've viewed many lists, articles and reviews and there is always a variation in the "Top 10" or "Top 100" great guitarists. However, one thing that nearly every list has in common is that the top position is inhabited by Jimi Hendrix. Other frequently mentioned names are Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dime Bag Darrel, Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen, Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Rory Gallagher and Kurt Cobain.
Jimi Hendrix's playing style is probably one of the most influential and innovative of all time. He taught himself to play guitar and though unable to read music went on to produce a number of experimental effects and techniques with distortion and feedback. He's also known for such tricks as playing guitar behind his back and picking it with his teeth.
Chuck Berry is credited for combining the jazz sound with country to produce what we now recognize as "blues rock". Keith Richards has been inspired by Berry's style through out his career. Stevie Ray Vaughan is noted for his influential blues guitar. His style was often compared to Hendrix's because of his remarkable control of feedback and distortion. They are joined by Jimmy Page who has been said to be one of the all-time most influential and versatile guitarists in rock history and has been credited as the forefather of heavy metal.
Rory Gallagher combined influences of the Mississippi Delta with those of his Irish background to create a unique sound that still lands this guitarist in the top 10 of every list. And Kurt Cobain developed his own style through the production of harmoniously disconnected sequences that have been described as "murky".
Eddie Van Halen, although not the inventor of the technique, popularized "tapping". By holding the pick between his thumb and middle finger, his index finger is left free to alternate between picking and tapping which has led to his very distinctive style. Dime Bag Darrel of Pantera stated that he was greatly inspired by Van Halen's techniques and very positively so, since Dime Bag Darrel has been referred to as the greatest heavy metal guitarist of all time. Another heavy metal great was Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi. Missing two of his fingers, Iommi, was inspired to creative heights that gave his style a distinct eerie, dark tone that characterizes the music of the band.
Through the history of rock, the great guitarists have incorporated a variety of techniques that produce their signature style. Through experimentation and creativity, they have each developed a sound that is all their own.
