If you think you can save big money by buying books at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble, think again. To save really big, you need to forget these retailers and go to eBay's half.com.

Yes, these are not always new books but in many cases they're in such good condition they might as well be new, and the prices are just terrific.

As of this writing, a new, hardcover version of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code could be purchased for just $7.99. Brown's other big seller, Angels and Demons, was selling in brand new, gift quality for $3.63, and a copy of the book in “good” condition could be had for just $0.97.

If you'd like to catch up on Harry Potter's latest story (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price, it was for sale in “very good” condition for $9.57. Memoirs of a Geisha, the book on which the hit, new movie is based, was selling in “very good” condition for $3.22 and in “like new” condition for $5.00.

If mysteries are more to you liking, you could buy Patricia Cornwell's latest thriller, Predator in new, hardcover condition for just $5.85.

The other factor you need to take into consideration is shipping costs. Most of these books are shipped MediaMail, which is the U.S. Post Office's new term for what used to be “Book Rate.” If the seller will ship via MediaMail, you can figure on spending an extra $3.25 as half.com buyers pay all shipping charges – just as they do with eBay.

Half.com has literally

thousands of books, almost all of which can be purchased for 60% to 70% off regular retail prices -- or even more. Again, some of these books my be used but half.com always supplies condition ratings that range from “Brand New Items” to “Acceptable Items,” so you always know what you'll getting. Naturally, the poorer the condition you're willing to settle for, the cheaper the book.

Now, let's add it up. Supposing you buy Angels and Demons, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood, Price, Predator and and Memoirs of a Geisha on half.com, at the prices quoted above. In this case, you will have spent $19.61 – plus shipping – and you will have four of today's most popular books.

So, if you like books, go to half.com, start searching and have fun. Chances are, you'll be able to buy at least four books you want for less than $20 and for much less if you shop smart.

Here's something else you should knoow about. It's a new technology called HD Radio that enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally. This is a tremendous technological leap from today's familiar analog broadcasts. These digital broadcasts provide listeners with radically improved audio quality, more radio channels through multicasting, and new data services.
