The holidays are approaching, and so is the time to show family, friends and colleagues you appreciation, respect and love. As hard as it seems to find the right present for your nearby friends and family, it is even harder when it comes to people living in distant places, especially in places with cultural differences.
Being an experienced gift and flower shop owner in Israel, I believe I have the experience and knowledge to help you with choosing the right gift. Following are the questions you should ask yourself before you make a purchase decision:
- How old is the person? Of course there is the obvious difference between a 60 year old person and a 6 year old, but you should also keep in mind that in Israel most people between the ages of 18 and 21 are soldiers in the army, and could use different types of gifts than other young people in their age.
- Is the gift recipient religious? There are many colors in the religion rainbow – religious people would appreciate any kind of judaica artifact, while secular people would nearly always like a decorated
mezuzah or blessing.
- Does he or she keep kosher? not all Israeli wines are Kosher. If the person does keep kosher, make sure to buy him a Kosher wine (one with a proper “hechsher”).
- What occasion is the gift for? There are many kinds of blessings you can get – a house blessing for a new house, a blessing for the newborn, a blessing for a new business etc.
- Where in Israel does your friend / family live in? Some of the shops do not deliver to the occupied territories. In that case, it is important to note what the alternative is, and how the item will be shipped (the post office, no other option etc.).
I believe that these are the most important questions you should answer before choosing a gift to your beloved ones in Israel. Get your answers to these questions, and I think you’re ready to make the choice.
Happy holidays!
