I “AMS” MACABRE IN MOROCCO: AVOID MALADY ON YOUR TREK
Morocco is a land of beauty, enchantment and mountains. If you’re attempting to hike Mount Toubkal, in the High Atlas Mountains, then the last business you want to attend to is a battle with AMS. Your Morocco tour could be all over before you even reach base camp. If you choose to go hiking in Morocco, make sure you have preparations made beforehand with a
Morocco tour operator.
It’s very well possible to get sick while on the mountain. Since anyone climbing at or over 2,500 meters (though this is debated) are prone to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), you’ll have to be very heedful while
trekking in Morocco. Most mountain ranges and hiking will assuredly exceed this elevation, so here’s what you can do to prevent AMS and all sorts of inopportune infirmities.
One of the best ways to avoid AMS is prevention. Getting in shape before your Morocco travel plans is key. Depending on your present fitness level, getting in shape for a High Atlas Mountains Trek shouldn’t take you forever.
This getting fit is not just for your head and lungs, however:
you want to make sure to break in those boots and get your ankles and shins used to rocks, turns, twists and pounding. One of the worst ways to tackle a High Atlas Mountains trek is to try to get in shape the first few days. Come with a few hikes or walks under your belt. AMS seems to affect people who are less fit.
Here are some tips to avoid AMS when you’re hiking in Morocco:
*Drink lots of water: four to six liters per day
*Eat carbs: the mountain doesn’t care about Atkins
*Don’t drink and trek: just don’t
*Don’t go up too fast: take a couple days to reach 3,000 meters, and always try to sleep at 3-400 meters higher each subsequent night
*Take drugs: this is to say, take Diamox or a similar prescribed drug if you’ve suffered AMS before
*Rest during your hike and throughout the day
*Bring oxygen in a can—maybe hard to bring on the airline
*Look out for symptoms:
-Early warning AMS: headache, nausea, dizziness, can’t sleep, loss of appetite, harder time breathing
-Later AMS (more severe): rapid breathing, delirium, vomiting, headache, extreme tiredness, blue lips, uncontrolled cough, and coma (you can die, descend immediately)
