Hotels on Bora Bora can get pricey. Unless you find a package deal, you will be shocked by what you will see. We were shocked anyway. Our dreams of staying in an “over the water bungalow” were dispelled when we learned that this accommodation type will set us back at least five hundred dollars per night. Yikes. Our basic requirements included air conditioning and a clean room. Hotel MaiTai was offered to us by our Tahitian travel agent and we accepted … Let’s go to Bora Bora … woohooo
Most hotels, including MaiTai, have small booths set up at the airport. They will greet you there and you have no problems with getting to your destination. The greeting at the hotel includes a glass of pineapple juice and fragrant tropical flowers. We chose a room in the hotel building area because this was the most affordable. It was large, well furnished, open, air-conditioned and clean. Nice. It had a small balcony which we did not use since it was too hot to hang around there and we wanted to be on the beach anyway. Breakfast was included and it was good, with a solid selection of pastries, breakfast meats, cereal, fruit, coffee, orange juice … you know the standard … The beach in front of the hotel is not that great. This beach is definitely not the reason to visit Bora Bora. The hotel does offer free boat rides to the motus (small islands in the lagoon) where you can swim in the crystal light blue waters to your heart’s content. Matira beach is also a five minute walk from MaiTai and it is just plain gorgeous. The location of the hotel is quite convenient. Apart from Vaitape, this is where it’s at in Bora Bora. Service was
solid at the hotel. It seemed like the employees were not too quick to help out though. They would smile and acknowledge your request, but then take a loooong time to do anything about it. I guess that’s the way it is around here. You can arrange all sorts of extra activities at the desk as well. Close to the Hotel there is a very well equipped supermarket with prices that match those in Southern California. There are quite a few eating establishments around here if you do not want to always eat at the hotel restaurant.
To sum it up: Location is good to serve as a base for exploring the island. If you would like to just lay around and relax, you are better of going elsewhere, since the beach here is not that great and you will have to walk or take a boat to a true tropical paradise area. We were happy with the stay here since we really did not hang around the hotel too much. Being in Bora Bora is not about being at the hotel anyways. It is about being in the most amazing blue lagoon anywhere. Recommended for active people and people on a budget. If you have the money, go to one of the other resorts whose prices match the out of this world experience.
P.S. Oh my god … Honeymooners are everywhere. I don’t think we saw anyone that was not on a honeymoon. … everyone coupled up …
