Do-it-yourself copywriting is a boon for small business owners. Copywriting is writing to sell something, usually a concept, a product or a service. Copywriting includes writing websites, blogs, brochures, email newsletters, sales letters, catalogues and advertisements.

Not every small business owner wants to hire a copywriter, though, and the solution is to become a DIY copywriter. Reasons to go the DIY route with copywriting may be influenced by the fact that you:

" don't have the budget
" feel no one else knows your business like you do
" are a confident experienced writer
" don't have time to fit in with someone else's schedule
The first step to writing your own copy is to know what outcome you want to achieve. If you don't know your goals, you may as well not start. Define clear results that you want to achieve from your words so that you can craft a better message.

Copywriting is an art, but the good news is that it can be learned. Find inspiration from a variety of online and offline sources. Here are a few

tips for the DIY copywriter.
" Be aware of newspaper advertisements. Which ones do you notice? Why?
" Which web or print article headlines draw you in? Which ones don't work so well? Why?
" Study examples of the type of copy you want to write.
" Read blogs and books about copywriting.
" Fine-tune your DIY copywriting antennae to notice good examples.
" Read about and study how online and offline writing differ

Pay particular attention to the call to action. A call to action asks the reader to do something. Make it clear what you want readers to do. It may be to ask for more information, to sign up for a newsletter or to purchase a free product. Explain why (benefits), when and how you want them to act.

Once you have your first do-it-yourself copywriting product under your belt, refine the process and your copy for the next time. Test how effective your DIY copywriting was. How did the responses or sales stack up against the outcome you were aiming for?

Start your copywriting with the end in mind.
