I wrote my first article in an area of my expertise in 1992. I was asked by the local psychiatric center to write an article about teenagers for their monthly newsletter.

I agreed to do it, not having a clue about at least two things:

1) What I was going to write about, and

2) Where this little adventure was going to take me.

What to write about

At that time, most of my marriage and family therapy practice was working with teenagers and their families. So naturally, that's what I was asked to write about - teenagers and their families.

I had a little presentation I had been doing for parents of teens, and it was broken into 3 parts:

1. Parenting teenagers is a tough job.

2. Families can "get stuck."

3. Families have strength for change and growth.

So it ocurred to me that all I had to do was right down what I talked about, in 3 different sections. So that's what I did and, ta da, there was my first

Where this has taken me

Thirteen years later, I'm closing in on 1,000 articles and this little writing gig has done a lot for me and my practice. When people ask me how much the local paper paid me for writing a weekly column, my answer is always that you and I would have trouble going to lunch on what I got paid for each article, but what I have gotten from writing articles is simply priceless.
